SPRINGFIELD – More rain again kept farmers out of the fields this past week, says Mark Schleusener of the USDA crop statistics service in Illinois.

Corn planted advanced to 24 percent, though it was almost done this time last year. Same for soybeans, nine percent planted now.

More than half the state is reporting too much water at both topsoil and subsoil.

Schleusener says some farmers are compelled to put the seed in now, even though conditions are not optimal, and hope for the best if not from their crops, then from insurance.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
