NORMAL – The Town of Normal would buy property on the northeast side of town to build a fire station there under a proposal to be considered Monday night by the town council.

The agreement with the current landowner of the Blackstone Trails residential subdivision calls for the town government to buy 1.75 acres of undeveloped property at 1438 Hershey Rd. for up to $450,000.

The new fire station, east of Menard’s at the intersection of Hershey and Shepard Roads, would replace the station at 1300 East College Avenue. A staff report to the council said the new site would improve access to east Normal, Veteran’s Parkway, and I-55, and also quicken response to mutual aid calls in Bloomington.

The property would have to be re-zoned for public use.

The town is willing to defer development fees of an estimated $188,670, and the Blackstone Trails owner would be able to build denser residential developments.

Construction of a northeast Normal fire station is still a couple of years away. The fire department recently moved into new headquarters on Main Street at the Illinois State University campus, replacing the Adelaide Street station.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
