E-cigarettes may go up in smoke if sales to minors continue

A major crackdown on the sale of e-cigarette devices to minors was announced Wednesday as the U.S Food and Drug Administration sent warning letters and fines to retailers and five major e-cigarette manufacturers.

The retailers and manufacturers allegedly sold Juul devices, which look like computer flash drives, and other e-cigarette products to minors which is illegal.

The FDA is considering a ban on the sale of ALL flavored e-cigarette products if the companies don’t come up with plans to stop the sales to minors in the next two months.

FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said the agency is also investigating whether e-cigarette manufacturers have introduced new products after Aug. 8, 2016, without premarket authorization.

Wednesday’s announcement is just the start of new efforts according to Gottlieb.
