SPRINGFIELD – Tropical Storm Gordon has provided a wet start to September in Illinois.

The statewide average precipitation this month has already hit three and a half inches, more than three inches above normal according to State Climatologist Jim Angel.

“We’ve already gotten a month’s worth of rain in the first 10 days of the month,” said Angel. “There’s been some areas that have been really dry this year that finally got some rain. There are some areas of Western Illinois that have been dry since spring, and those areas have gotten four to eight inches of rain.”

Angel said the wet weather is due to Gordon and a cold front that passed through Illinois.

“It’s a little bit unusual but not unheard of to have tropical storms move their way up the Mississippi River valley and get into Illinois,” Angel said. “When they do, they tend to prduce quite a bit of rain over very large areas.”

The highest rain total was east of St. Louis in Clay City with more than 10 inches.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
