BLOOMINGTON – Four Bloomington Police officers suffered what the department said were minor to moderate injuries while struggling with a man armed with a handgun.

The suspect was also injured and treated at a local hospital before police say they took him to the McLean County Jail. A news release issued Wednesday said the officers sought private medical treatment.

Officers reportedly saw two men walking in the middle of the roadway at Oakland Avenue and Evans Street. Authorities said one of the men attempted to conceal his hands and make other suspicious movements. Police say a 9 mm handgun fell to the ground during a long struggle.

Court records show Jusstin Johnson, 22, of Bloomington is charged with being an armed habitual criminal, unlawful use of weapons by a felon, three counts of resisting and injuring police officers, and one count of aggravated battery on an officer.

Johnson remains jailed on $50,000 bond, and must post $5,035 to be released from jail.

He’s scheduled to appear in court July 20.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
