Penguin Project puts on Madagascar Jr.

Artists in a Penguin Project production (Penguin Project)

By Crystal Donaldson

NORMAL – The Penguin Project of McLean County is putting on Madagascar Jr.

Penguin Project gives 10-24 year olds with developmental disabilities the opportunity to sing, dance and act in a live junior musical.

A volunteer peer mentor is partnered with each artist to help guide them through four months of rehearsals to the final show.

Music Director, Christina Angle, joined Penguin Project last year. She explained how she’s seen the show change the artists for the better.

“When they first started, they couldn’t really look you in the eye,” said Angle. “They had very low social skills. By the end of the show season you’ll see them have no problem going up to a stranger and having a whole out conversation and looking them in the eye. The whole deal.”

A volunteer peer mentor is partnered with each artist to help guide them through four months of rehearsals to the final show.

Angle also said her favorite part has been watching the actors gain confidence.

“It’s showing them like hey you have a lot of abilities and a lot of talent. So here’s your stage to show the world what you’ve got,” she finished.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
