BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington man who struck and killed a teenage bicyclist with his car last summer was sentenced to 30 years in prison today.
Appearing in McLean County Court, Judge Casey Costigan sentenced Steven Mccuen, 33, to 16 years in prison for aggravated drunk driving and 14 years for failure to report an accident. Prosecutors said Mccuen had six to seven beers at a local bar before he entered his car.
Around 8:30 p.m., while driving in the 1400 block of Six Points Road in Bloomington, Mccuen hit 16-year-old Dale Nelson with his car. Mccuen fled the scene while Nelson was transported to a Peoria hospital. Nelson died at the hospital a week later.
Mccuen’s 30-year sentence is effective immediately and can be served consecutively in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Mccuen has credit for 265 days already served.
