BLOOMINGTON – A McLean County murder trial that was scheduled to begin next week has been delayed to give the defense more time to review evidence.

Matthew Isbell, 23, of Marquette Heights faces murder charges in the death of Teresa Poehlman, 47, of East Peoria, whose body was found stabbed and strangled at the Sugar Grove Nature Preserve near McLean last July 2.

Isbell testified against co-defendant Christine Roush, Poehlman’s daughter who pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced in January to 40 years in prison.

Isbell told police Roush killed her mother to stop her from revealing Roush was a prostitute, which could have caused her to lose custody of her own daughter.

McLean County prosecutors say the defense has been given more than 20 DVDs of videos, photos and other evidence. The latest DVD was delivered by Illinois State Police to attorneys in the case on April 23.

The trial has been set for a status hearing on May 30 when a new trial date could be set.

Isbell is being held on $3 million bond.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
