BLOOMINGTON – The second phase of the Sunset Rotary Club’s initiative to beautify the entrance to Bloomington’s west side is underway.
The club is in the midst of planting 46 trees along Market Street in a three-mile stretch. New trees will be planted from Wylie Drive to the east end of Market Street in downtown.
“Everybody knows that trees add to the beauty and the value and the health of a community,” said Rotarian Joe Grabill. “So we’re committed to doing that in this manner.”
Grabill said the purpose is to create an entrance that makes visitors and community members feel like they are entering a beautiful community.
“The president of Sunset Rotary Club came to me and said, ‘The model of Rotary International this year is every rotarian plants a tree. So Joe would you find a place for our club to plant trees?’. That’s how it got started,” Gabrill finished.
Rotary club members started planting at 8:30 Wednesday morning and plan to complete the second phase of planting on Thursday.
Volunteers who are interested in helping out are invited to bring a shovel to the parking lot of Mount Pisgah Church on the corner of Allin and Market streets Thursday at 9 a.m.
