BLOOMINGTON – Adlai Stevenson Elementary School is collecting donations to help seven families who were displaced by a fire at an east Bloomington apartment complex on Saturday.
Word spread on social media about the need for clothing and other necessities for the 29 people who lost nearly everything in the blaze.
Stevenson Elementary’s gym was filled with donated items on Sunday to give to the displaced families. The school will be open today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the public to drop off donations. There are no classes today, it’s a School Improvement Day in District 87.
Meanwhile, a third-grade teacher at Northpoint Elementary in Bloomington is collecting donations at school to give to the families.
Fire crews were on scene for hours knocking down the fire at the 12-unit apartment building. The cause is still under investigation. One firefighter was injured while battling the blaze.
