BLOOMINGTON – A national study shows every 98 seconds someone becomes a victim of sexual violence. Bloomington’s YWCA is trying to help survivors cope with the long term effects.
The YWCA is adding two new specialized support groups for survivors of sexual assault beginning in late February.
An Illinois State University group and a LGBTQIA group was created to be more accessible and inclusive according to YWCA staff.
Director of community outreach, Gabe Cripe, wants participants to know they are not alone.
“One of the good things about the groups offer that you maybe can’t get at individual counseling is hearing from other folks who have gone through something similar. Maybe they can’t say I know exactly how you feel but they’re able to relate to you,” Cripe said.
The YWCA also offers seven other free support groups. Pre-registration is required.
