PEORIA – The continuous cold weather can be difficult on outdoor runners.
Whether it’s just a 10 minute run, or a marathon, it’s important to layer up when it’s cold. A local health professional said layering up is better than just one thick layer; that way it keeps your natural body heat in. If you get overheated, you can always take layers off.
The health coach said it’s also important to stay hydrated, even in the cold.
“A lot of times, the thing that people are missing is staying hydrated in the cold weather. So a lot of times, because we’re not sweating and we’re not getting really warm, we underestimate that we may be getting dehydrated or that we need to drink. So definitely checking in with yourself and making sure you’re staying hydrated in the cold weather is important,” said exercise physiologist and health coach, Crystal Moulton.
Moulton said hand and feet warmers would be a great asset on a cold run.
“Double up on your socks. Make sure you have something on your head, and covering your ears. A lot of heat is going to escape from your, the top. So definitely making sure that, that is covered. Even, your face. I’ve seen people out with face masks too.”
