NORMAL-Two Normal Community high school juniors are raising money and awareness about the current conditions in Puerto Rico.
KeKe Hardin and Annabelle Chinski decided to hold a benefit concert as a result of a school project.
It’s been four months since the hurricanes impacted the island of Puerto Rico and 3.4 million people are still without power. In some places conditions have been immobilizing for residents.
That’s according to Illinois Wesleyan Hispanic Studies professor Daynali Flores Rodriguez, who spoke at the event held at Normal Theatre.
She also said the relief effort has been slow.
“There has been a very deficient response in terms of what our government and what our leaders are doing for us. It’s just not fair. We pay our share and we should be treated as the citizens that we are,” said Rodriguez.
Illinois State University Department of Special Education professor Yojanna Cuenca Carlino, said the need is still great.
“Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens. Puerto Ricans have the same rights and the help has not been quite as fast as we would have expected,” Carlino added.
All funds will be donated to the non-profit orginization, Puerto Rico Agenda.
