BLOOMINGTON – Staff of the Bloomington Public Library are working to convince city council members an expansion of the facility would be beneficial for the community.
Library Director Jeanne Hamilton said the library is hoping to expand programs for both children and adults.
“We’d really like to be able to offer guided play for children, offer learning tools for adults and the ability to apply for jobs and further their education at the library,” Hamilton explained.
Earlier this month the city council approved a $4.8 million tax levy for the library.
Hamilton also took note of the condition of the library, saying there is a list of maintenance work that could be done on the building.
“We have carpeting that has been worn, roofing needs to be replaced, and the parking lot issues where curbing is crumbling a little bit, those types of things,” explained Hamilton. “Heating and ventilation could use some work as well.”
Hamilton estimates $2 million over the next five years will be enough to fix up the library. She says that could change if the city council decides to move the library to a different location.
