NORMAL – Now that Illinois has ended a nearly two-year budget stalemate, Illinois State University’s Board of Trustees is expected Friday to formally adopt an annual spending plan.

The board gave preliminary approval to a $427 million spending plan in May, but it was pending any commitment of funding from the state. ISU saw a $7 million cut in state funding.

University staff has also laid out a $300 million wish list for construction projects that trustees will consider submitting to the state. The university is requesting money for new buildings for the Mennonite College of Nursing, Thomas Metcalf School and University High School. ISU is also seeking funding to rehabilitate Milner Library, and DeGarmo and Williams halls.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
