NORMAL – The woman holding one of the highest profile positions in Normal town government is stepping down.

The town announced Monday the Executive Director of the Children’s Discovery Museum and Cultural Arts Department, Shelleigh Birlingmair, has resigned to accept a development position at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center and Advocate Eureka Hospital.

Birlingmair has been in her current position for only a year, but she said in a news release that she has aspired for years to do full-time development work, and her time at the Children’s Discovery Museum solidified her passion for working with non-profit organizations.

City Manager Mark Peterson said Birlingmair will be greatly missed, but he said the position at Advocate was an overwhelming opportunity for her.

Birlingmair’s duties running the Cultural Arts Department included overseeing operations at the Normal Theatre.

Peterson said there’s no timeline for naming Birlingmair’s replacement. He said plans and programs are well-established for the rest of this year and beyond.

Birlingmair’s resignation is effective at the end of this month.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
