CHICAGO – A member of the 1985 Chicago Bears is offering a new look at the Super Bowl Champions in a new book.

Linebacker Otis Wilson wrote in his new book ‘If These Walls Could Talk’ he didn’t have a great relationship with coach Mike Ditka.

PODCAST: Listen to Scott’s interview with Wilson on WJBC.

“I can respect a lot of things he’s said and done, but there are a lot of things I question,” Wilson said.

Wilson recalled to WJBC’s Scott Laughlin he lost his starting job to injury and claims Ditka broke a promise.

“You are going to have to give me a better answer than that because if I work by butt off to do what I need to do, then you need to do what you need to do and I’m going to hold you to it,” Wilson said. “I’ve always heard from my parents, you give respect to get respect.”

Wilson added the fractured relationship between Dikta and defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan likely prevented a dynasty.

“I guarantee you if Buddy Ryan would have been able to deal with Mike Ditka on an ongoing basis and stayed there in Chicago, I guarantee we definitely would have had two Super Bowls in a row and we might have had three,” Wilson said.

Ryan, the architect of the Bears fabled ’46’ defense, left Chicago after that Super Bowl season to take a head coaching job with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wilson added head injuries are a ‘huge problem’ in football now, but he said new rules have to protect more than just quarterbacks and receivers. He said the National Football League needs to ‘shell out money’ to take care of players who have suffered head trauma.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
