Home sales, a key indicator of Bloomington-Normal’s economic health, are a bit weaker so far this year, compared to the same period a year ago. However, the average sale price for an existing home went up in August compared to year-ago levels.

Latest data from the Bloomington-Normal Association of Realtors show existing home sales declined 0.6 percent during the first eight months of the year, compared to the same time last year.

The association reported 1,878 purchases of existing homes from January through August, a dozen fewer than the same time last year.

For the month, realtors sold 270 existing homes, better than July’s total of 252, but softer than this year’s high of 333 sales in June.

The average sales price for an existing home during August was $171,033, or 3.7 percent above the price in August of 2016.

The association said sales of newly-built homes are down 12.9 percent from the first eight months of 2016. Only 11 new homes were purchased in August and only 101 for the entire year.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
