NORMAL – Heartland Community College President Rob Widmer has announced his retirement.

Widmer has served as Heartland’s president since 2013, the third in the college’s 26-year history.

“Certainly I have seen a lot and done a lot. in that period of time and I’m at a point in my career where it would be nice to spend a little more time with my family,” Widmer said of his four children and 10 grandchildren.

Widmer will officially retire in June 2018. He will leave having served over 40 years in Illinois higher education with 22 years at Heartland.

“Few people have had as much impact on Heartland Community College and higher education in our district than Rob Widmer,” said Board of Trustee President Gregg Chadwick. “He has relentlessly and tirelessly worked to secure Heartland’s rightful place as a pillar of this community and we wish him the best as he retires from the presidency at Heartland.”

Heartland Vice President of Business Services Doug Minter commended Widmer for his efforts leading the school through financial challenges stemming from the Illinois budget impasse.

“His steadfast commitment to the college might only be surpassed by his tremendous work ethic, integrity, and humility,” Minter said. “The Heartland campus would not be the invaluable resource it is today for students, employees and the community were it not for his vast knowledge of community colleges, skill in financial management, and trusted leadership.”

The Heartland Board of Trustees will convene in special session on Tuesday to discuss his retirement and plans for selection of a successor.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
