NORMAL – Graduate transfer Jerron Martin, a 6-foot, 175-pound senior guard, will continue his education and basketball career at Illinois State, head coach Dan Muller announced Wednesday.
Martin is enrolled as a graduate student and is eligible to compete immediately for ISU during the 2017-18 season under the NCAA graduate transfer exception. He most recently played at Texas Southern for two seasons from 2015-17. With Martin on the team, the Tigers won the SWAC regular-season title both seasons and advanced to the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Prior to Texas Southern, Martin played one year at South Plains Junior College in 2014-15 after beginning his collegiate career at Ole Miss in 2013-14.
“We’re excited to add Jerron to the program,” Muller said. “He will give us added depth at the guard position. We look forward to getting to work with him on the court while helping him earn his master’s degree here at Illinois State.”
A Prince George’s County, Maryland native, Martin averaged 18.4 points per game during his senior season at Princeton Day School. As a high school senior, Martin led Princeton Day School to a 38-11 finish and set the school’s all-time double-double record. At Ole Miss, Martin played in two games before receiving a medical redshirt. As a redshirt freshman at South Plains Junior College, Martin started eight of 22 games.
During his redshirt sophomore season at Texas Southern in 2015-16, Martin started three of 21 games played, shot 40.7 percent from the field. He becomes Illinois State’s lone senior and fifth upperclassman.
