ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Cardinals and two of its most prominent players are taking part in relief efforts to help flood victims in Texas.

The Cardinals announced Tuesday they’re matching pledges from players Matt Carpenter and Adam Wainwright to donate $10,000 for every home run Carpenter hits between now and the end of the season.

Carpenter, who’s from the Texas coastal city of Galveston, took to social media to make the pledge, and Wainwright soon followed suit, announcing he would match his teammate’s pledge for $10,000 each time Carpenter homers. Now the Cardinals will match their donations as well.

Cardinals Care has established a special Hurricane Harvey Children’s Relief Fund at youcaring.com to help the many children impacted by the catastrophic storm. Fans are encouraged to assist with the relief efforts and can donate directly at youcaring.com/cardinalscare. Fans can join the conversation with #HomeRunRelief

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
