BLOOMINGTON – United Way of McLean County’s Power of the Purse event in June raised $32,000 for two local non-profit groups.

United Way has presented checks to YWCA’s Labyrinth Outreach Services to Women and Mid Central Community Action’s Neville House.

“The power of our collective purses truly shown through, from the support of our sponsors to the generosity of all the women in attendance,” said Tracey Vincent and Suniti Sud, 2017 Power of the Purse Co-Chairs. “Our planning committee worked hard to make this a fun evening for everyone, and we are thrilled that we can help support the mission of our community’s two women’s shelters. That’s the true power of this event.”

Power of the Purse is a unique fundraising event accessorized with all things women love including purses and spa packages. More than 500 women attended the event at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel & Conference Center.

“We are very thankful and excited for this gift from the United Way’s Power of the Purse,” said Kristin Manzi, director, YWCA McLean County Labyrinth. “With this gift, one of the things we will do is train community mentors as additional support for Labyrinth women who are re-entering the community after incarceration; which in-turn, will help break the cycle of recidivism.”

“On behalf of the 700-plus survivors of domestic violence who were positively impacted by our countering domestic violence services last year and our Mid Central Community Action board and staff, we thank United Way of McLean County and the Power of the Purse planning committee and guests for a fabulous event to raise funds for the economic empowerment of women,” said Deborah White, Executive Director of MCCA.

The United Way of McLean County has set their date for their 2018 Power of the Purse to take place on Thursday, May 31 at the Doubletree with Cheryl Hussain serving as chairperson for the event.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
