PONTIAC – The Illinois Department on Aging is giving tips on how to spot elder abuse.
June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month. Department spokeswoman Veronica Vera says for every reported incident of elder abuse, five others go unreported.
“Financial exploitation is the type of abuse that is most frequently reported,” Vera noted. “Fifty-four percent of reports are financial exploitation and a lot of times what you’ll see is people will experience more than one type of abuse.”
If an elderly person is being abused, you can call the department’s hotline at 866-800-1409.
