MURPHSYBORO – Perhaps no other Congressman is more familiar with the suspected shooter in Wednesday’s incident at the GOP Congressional baseball practice in northern Virginia than the man who represents the Belleville area.

Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Bost of Murphysboro said all indications showed James Hodgkinson, 66, had politics in mind before opening fire on members of Congress.

“Someone walked up to them in the parking lot and said ‘Is this Republicans or Democrats?’ They thought was really strange,” Bost said. “And then they went from there to their car and then five minutes later and the shooter opened up. Whether that was shooter that talked to them, they are still trying to do the investigation on that.”

Hodgkinson, who owned a home inspection business, later died.

Bost said he is concerned about the tone in Washington.

“We are Republicans, we are Democrats, we have different ideas, we have different beliefs, but we are all trying to work for the betterment,” Bost said. “Unfortunately, we’ve got to where there’s a lot of anger out here.”

Bost said his office has received 10 calls from Hodgkinson in the past year, but said none of the contact from the suspect led him to believe he was dangerous or threatening.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
