Two tickets remain for the American Red Cross Evening of Stars and a chance to meet Cubs World Series hero David Ross. But to get them you’ll have to listen to the radio.

WJBC and Radio Bloomington will be auctioning off the last two tickets between 6 am and 5 pm on Thursday, April 13th. This year’s Evening of Stars will be held at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Uptown Normal Tuesday, April 18 at 7 pm.

The event co-chairs are Illinois State University president Larry Dietz and his wife Marlene, who helped recruit Ross as keynote speaker.

“With David Ross’s involvement and with the auction we’re really looking forward to another way to supplement the funds we raise to the event. We hope people call in and bid high,” said Larry Dietz.

“We’re really excited to meet him and we hope that, by his presence, great funds are raised for the American Red Cross,” said Marlene Dietz. “Every day they’re reaching out and helping people in our community, whether it’s by donating blood or helping those that are challenged by terrible storms or disasters or fires in our community.”

The Dietz’s couldn’t say whether Ross will do any dancing at the gala. Ross is currently a contestant on the popular show Dancing With the Stars.

“We watched him dancing behind the plate catching the baseball for the Cubs. We had no idea he could dance on a dance floor. He’s doing pretty well,” said President Dietz.

The VIP package to be auctioned off on radio includes two tickets to the Evening of Stars, a meet and greet with David Ross, an autographed David Ross jersey and a hotel stay at the Marriott Uptown Normal.

The highest bid will win the package. To submit your bid during the auction, call (309) 829-2345. Stay up to date on the  bidding on WJBC.com.

Money raise from the auction will be donated to the American Red Cross.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
