BLOOMINGTON – For the second time is this calendar year, the Bloomington City Council has made a change to a speed limit at the behest of the community surrounding the road.
This time it was a residential area of Fox Creek Road, from Oakland Avenue to Stonehedges Court. The speed limit was set at 40 miles per hour, but after a lot of community feedback, the council has rolled back the speed to just 30 mph.
Matt Wing, a resident of that area of Fox Creek Road, spoke during the public comment period of the Council Meeting Monday night. He said the community was nearly 100 percent behind the proposed drop of the speed limit.
“We had at least 100 neighbors attend a meeting (at the Den Golf Course). Wing said. “ We had unanimous support from the people in attendance that night, that the city should take a measure to lower the speed of vehicles through that stretch of road.”
Alderman David Sage was impressed with the community involvement in this cause.
“I think this sets the stage to not only have a meaningful conversation at the neighborhood level, but also some assurance to the council,” Sage said.
The measure passed unanimously..
Sage said he was uncertain what lies in store for the rest of Fox Creek Road, which is currently set at 45 mph. He did say any changes to speed limits across town would have complete transparency.
Sage added roads aren’t just for cars anymore, and rules of the road need to reflect that.
“Whether is bicycles, or walking, or whatever mode there might be, it’s going to take the council awhile to wrap it’s mind around what that does at the street level,” Sage said.
The City Council also banned commercial truck through traffic on Clinton Boulevard between Empire and Division streets.
