BLOOMINGTON – The President of the Bloomington-Normal NAACP was disappointed by the comments mayoral candidate Kevin Lower made in a Facebook group in 2014.
Lower had said there are more opportunities in Africa than in North America. That was in response to a post which said Africans Americans who want to escape racism should return to their native land.
“I was actually surprised. I’ve had a few conversations with Kevin and I never thought that I would see something like that,” said Bloomington-Normal NAACP President Quincy Cummings. “When I was made aware of that this morning I was really disappointed in him.”
Lower has said the comments were not intended to be racially charged. Cummings said the comment does come across as racially motivated, whether that was in the intention or not.
“It almost seems as though he was co-signing the person that made the initial reply,” Cummings said.
Cummings believed Lower does need to apologize.
