EVANSTON – A state senator from Evanston has announced his plans to run for governor.
Daniel Biss officially unveiled his campaign this morning on a Facebook Live broadcast. Biss is a Democrat who has served in the senate since 2013 after completing one term as state representative.
Biss said he wants to take the state back not from just Governor Bruce Rauner or House Speaker Michael Madigan, but from the way state business is conducted.
“The problems we face in Illinois are not about a person,” Biss said during his announcement. “They’re about a broken system. What we really need to do is fix the system, and that’s why I’m running for governor, to build the movement to take our system back from the billionaires and machine politicians whose voices are heard while the rest of us are locked out.”
Biss said he favors term limits for legislative leaders. He also wants to change the tax system to fix the ongoing state budget troubles by requiring wealthy taxpayers who are able to pay more to do so.
Biss was a math professor at the University of Chicago before becoming a state legislator. He holds a doctorate from MIT and an undergraduate degree from Harvard.
