BLOOMINGTON – McLean County Clerk Kathy Michael is looking ahead to the elections in April, which will decide who seats on local school boards, city councils, and several other entities.
Michael told WJBC’s Terry James turnout is always low in these elections, despite how important they are.
“It affects our local tax dollars. We know these local folks who run our schools, and our townships, and all those things,” said Michael. “And yet we’ll have a 12 to 15 percent turnout.”
Michael wasn’t sure why there is such poor turnout for those elections, but guessed part of the reason could be there is not as much advertising involved.
Michael added the November Election went smoothly. She pointed especially to the Illinois State Bone Student Center, which in March had hours long wait times for voting. Michael said that was not the case this time around.
“I went out and talked to the students there,” said Michael. “They reported a 12.5 minute wait and they were not complaining.”
Michael said her office committed a lot of resources to that voting center to make sure there were not long waits.
