SPRINGFIELD – Seniors who need help managing medications may be able to look to the state of Illinois.
Spokeswoman Veronica Vera says the state is launching a demonstration project to help seniors with complex medication regimens.
“Non-adherence to a medication regimen is one of the primary reasons why older adults are admitted and of course seniors are the largest consumers of medications so they are the most vulnerable to adverse reactions or events,” said Vera.
The goal is to make sure they are taking the correct meds at the correct times. Pharmacists will make in-home visits and work with doctors to organize the medications and set up a manageable plan for taking them. The demo project will run for one year. If it is successful, it may then open to the public.
