Kewanee- The Deer Creek-Mackinaw Chiefs are headed to the IHSA Class 2A State Championship Game after defeating Annawan-Wethersfield  34-7 in Kewanee Saturday afternoon. The Chiefs will now take on Maroa-Forsyth in the Class 2A Final.

Dee-Mac struck first in the contest, as Jared Reese ran in a 1 yard score early in the first quarter. Dee-Mac would miss the extra point however, and 6-0. The Chiefs would hold the Titans defensively until less than a minute to go in the half, when Annawan-Wethersfield  would get a rushing touchdown of their own, taking a 7-6 lead into the halftime break.

The third quarter proved to be decisive to the outcome, the Chiefs rolled out of the gate with a 21 yard rushing TD by backup running back Preston Lester. Lester would go on to have two more rushing touchdowns in the quarter, helping DeeMack put up 20 points and take the running game away from Annawan-Wethersfield

Lester rushed for 114 yards for the game, but was topped by Jared Reese who finished with 170 on 34 carries and a second quarter touchdown run of 1 yard. Jacob Carnicle capped Dee-Mac’s scoring with a 3 yard run late in the game.

The Chiefs, now 12-1 will play Maroa-Forsyth(10-3) in next Friday’s 2A Championship Game at the University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium.

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
