Ralph Nader: Trump stole progressive message

When Ralph Nader viewed Donald Trump’s final television ad, aired just before Americans headed to the polls, he saw a populist message.

“Except for his comments on immigration, it could have been given by an progressive politician in America,” Nader says. “So he sort of seized the message of income inequality, wealth inequality, abandonment of the working classes of America.”

The former presidential candidate and political reform activist tells Steve Fast that the Democratic party ignored the populist of their base, and Donald Trump used the rhetoric of the left to tap into the public’s discontent.

“This was a revolt of main street over Wall Street,” Nader says.”This was a revolt of over the capture of our government by commercial interests”
Nader says that one result of a Trump presidency will be the elimination of a trade deal Hillary Clinton championed, and her primary opponent Bernie Sanders opposed.

“The first casualty will be the Trans-Pacific Partnership. That’s the end of those corporate managed trade agreements,” Nader says. “Because Trump made a big deal out of that hh can’t back down on that.”

Other than killing TPP, Nader, like many, isn’t sure what Trump will do.

“Donald Trump right now is probably one of the most scared people in America because he never thought he was going to win,” Nader says. “Once he starts betraying his base and curtseying to corporate power, he’ll create an uproar among his base around the country.”

Nader spoke on The Steve Fast Show about Trump’s victory, the third party impact on the election and how he sees political activists using the surprise result to spark a grass roots response.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
