GIBSON CITY – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin visited with a group of farmers near Gibson City this week.
The Springfield Democrat rode along with Colfax farmer Gerald Thompson while he was harvesting soybeans.
“I’ve always said the education of a politician is a daunting task,” Durbin said. “So when a farmer wants to educate me about life today on the farm, I jump at the chance.”
Durbin heard farmers talk about how they use crops improved through the use of biotechnology, why they favor the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, and what might be needed to protect food security in the next federal farm bill.
Durbin added he would like to see the federal crop insurance program extended.
