SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Secretary of State Police Hazardous Device Unit rolled into action in their own backyard over the weekend after a suspicious package was found outside the Illinois Supreme Court, across the street from the Illinois Capitol in Springfield.
Henry Haupt with the Secretary of State’s office said the elite unit first tried X-rays to try to determine the package was not a threat.
“When those were inconclusive, they were able to use a high-tech robot to go in and actually remove items out of the package,” Haupt said. “At that point, we were able to make the determination that it was not an explosive device.”
A number of streets around the capitol and Supreme Court were closed while the unit.
