CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin met with Illinois native and Supreme Court nominee Chief Judge Merrick Garland this week about the status of his nomination.
Durbin called the lack of a hearing unprecedented obstruction. He also believes the election can do little to help.
“There was speculation that maybe, just maybe, if Donald Trump lost and Hillary Clinton won, maybe the Republicans would relent and in the closing weeks of this year give him his hearing and his vote,” Durbin said. “It is a sad chapter in the history of the United States Senate written for political reasons at the expense of a man who should have his day before a hearing in sworn testimony to tell us how he would like to continue to serve this nation.”
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has said he won’t consider Garland was nominated 182 days ago, the longest any Supreme Court nominee has awaited consideration.
