BLOOMINGTON – 13 people died on Illinois roads last labor day weekend in Illinois and at least three of those incidents involved alcohol. So says Illinois Department of Transportation Spokesman Brian Williamsen who says the volume of people driving and partying increases on Labor Day weekend. He says the best idea is to make plans before you go out to a party.
“Before you’re even going to go out, once you have that first drink your judgment begins to be impaired and so you want to make that plan before you head out for the evening,” said Williamsen. “Make sure you have someone that is going to give you a ride, make sure you have the number to a cab company or something in your phone, where public transit is available take that and definitely do that before.”
Labor Day weekend is known as the last unofficial weekend of summer and that can lead to some extra celebrations. Williamsen says police are looking for those who ignore drunk driving laws.
