BLOOMINGTON – Dr. David Gill of Bloomington is being allowed to run as an independent in the 13th Congressional District.
Gill argued In Springfield Federal Court that the amount of signatures he was forced to collect far exceeded what Republican Incumbent Rodney Davis and Democratic challenger Mark Wicklund were ordered to collect.
“They do want more choice,” said Gill. “I collected 5000 of those signatures myself so I probably had more than 10,000 little talks. People, frankly, are pretty disgusted with the choices that they have. There is tremendous room for independents to step outside of that two party box.”
The lawsuit was filed against the Illinois Board of Elections who set the rule on the number of signatures needed.
The board of elections can appeal, but the ballot is set to be certified Friday.
