SPRINGFIELD – The state’s corn crop is racing to completion and recent wet weather is helping top out possible yields.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that above average rainfall across the state fell last week and its timed well to help fill out the pods on soybeans. State crop statistician Mark Schleusener said the bean crop is in good shape.
“Two percent of soybean acres are turning color compared to three percent normally,” Schleusner said. “The condition of the soybean crop was rated four percent very poor to poor, 17 fair and 79 percent good to excellent, nearly the same as one week ago.”
The state’s corn crop is just starting to mature, and what’s in the field is in very good condition, 84 percent is reported looking good to excellent.
