BLOOMINGTON – The first day of school for St. Mary’s Catholic Elementary was a bit of an adventure.
The school is still cleaning up vandalism left from for juveniles who broke in over the summer. That meant one hallway, which Principal Jamie Hartrich called “the heart” of the school, was closed off.
“We had to redo the wax because they walked on it while it was still wet,” said Hartrich. “Because of the classrooms still having to be cleaned out, this was the last thing to be done. So we were just a little, still, behind.”
The hall will be opened Friday. Hartrich said this created an inconvenience as students and teachers had to take alternate routes to reach different areas of the school.
“Classes didn’t start on time, but they (students) were able to at least be here,” she said.
Teachers have been back at the school since last week. Hartrich said those with classrooms in the closed hall have been able to get into their classes through outside doors.
Hartrick added St. Mary’s is still calculating the total damage cost, but she does know the bill is in the thousands.
