PEORIA – The Peoria Chiefs allowed two big innings and fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits 11-4 on Friday night as the visitors took two of three in the series. The loss, their second in a row, give the Chiefs their first losing homestand since April and a 59-51 record overall.

The River Bandits jumped all over Chiefs starter Dailyn Martinez in the top of the first. Myles Straw led off with a single and scored on a triple by Ryne Birk for a 1-0 lead. With one out Brik scored on a sacrifice fly by Dexture McCall to double the lead. Kyle Tucker hit his sixth home run of the season, fourth against the Chiefs, for a 3-0 lead before Martinez got out of the inning.

The Chiefs got on the board against Framber Valdez in the bottom of the third. Carlos Torres doubled to start the inning and moved to third on a groundout. Magneuris Sierra brought home Torres to cut the Chiefs deficit to 3-1.

Quad Cities broke the game open in the fourth inning. Randy Cesar walked with one out and Anthony Hermelyn singled. With two down, Straw walked and all three runners scored on a double by Birk for a 6-1 lead. The Bandits poured it on against reliever Davis Ward in the sixth. Cesar singled and scored with two outs on a double by Straw. Birk singled home a run for an 8-1 lead and after a walk, two more scored on a double by McCall for a 10-a Bandits lead.

The Chiefs knocked Valdez out of the game in the seventh. Leo Pina led off with a triple and Anthony Davis walked. Chris Murphy came out of the bullpen and Bladimil Franco singled home Pina to cut the lead to 10-2. With two down, Sierra doubled to drive in Davis for a 10-3 game.

Both teams scored late as the River Bandits grabbed an unearned run on a triple by Straw in the ninth. The Chiefs answered in the bottom of the ninth as Sierra’s third hit of the game scored Franco for an 11-4 final score.

Martinez (3-4) allowed six runs on seven hits over five innings while striking out eight and walking two. Davis, added to the Chiefs roster Friday, allowed four runs on four hits and a walk over two innings. Tyler Bray allowed one unearned run on one hit while striking out one over one inning.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
