NORMAL – The Normal Town Council on Monday approved an ordinance creating a complete streets policy.
Town Engineer Gene Brown said this is a high level policy, meaning the town will consider all users of any potential new roads – whether they’re walking, biking, or driving. He added this is not a design prescription.
“It’s not an authoritative, ‘you will do this.’ It’s that, you will look at it,” said Brown. “And you’ll think about the street and you’ll think about who’s going to be using this street and what things can be implemented so that the users of that street can use it in a safe and comfortable and efficient manner.”
Brown explained there are already several examples of complete streets in Normal, such as the bike lanes on Blair Drive from College Avenue to Fort Jesse.
Also on Monday, the council approved a $1.5 million contract for the replacement of a major sewer line running partially along Northtown Road.
