QUINCY – State and local health officials say they have taken steps to prevent any further outbreak of legionella bacteria at the state’s oldest veterans home in Quincy.
Two new cases of Legionnaire’s Disease were reported this week at the Quincy home, where more than 50 residents and staff have been sickened and 12 have died of the bacteria since last year.
Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Nirav Shah said any resident showing the earliest signs of Legionnaire’s will get medical care immediately.
“The home where we are today is filled with men and women who put their lives on the line for our country,” Shah said. “As a result, our top priority is and must be to ensure their safety.”
The two residents who were sickened by the legionella bacteria recently have been released from the hospital.
