SPRINGFIELD – Two days after a Cook County judge ruled the independent map proposal was unconstitutional, the Illinois Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case.
The Indendent Map Amendment group wants an 11-member commission to take over the process of drawing Illinois’ legislative districts, rather than leaving it to lawmakers.
The group asked for an expedited ruling because the deadline to get the question on the November ballot is Aug. 26.
The petition effort was challenged by a group called the People’s Map which sued on behalf of minority groups.
