SPRINGFIELD – The new smartphone app Pokémon Go is bringing more and more people to historic sites.
Some welcome the development as a chance for mobile gamers to discover history, while others are concerned about the presence of the game at places like Arlington National Cemetery and the Holocaust Museum. Springfield’s historic Pasfield House, restored by former Clerk of the Illinois House Tony Leone, has been discovered by Pokemon Go players. Leone isn’t convinced they are ready to book a night at his bed and breakfast.
“We’ve been around a long enough time to be on Google and some of these search sites, that must be why they are finding us,” Leone said. “The last three days we have found people wandering around our parking lot looking at our signs and they weren’t tourists.”
The Illinois National Guard has banned people from all military sites to play Pokémon Go expect for the Illinois State Military Museum.
