Flag burning protester won’t face charges

URBANA – A Champaign County prosecutor has announced she won’t pursue charges against an Urbana man who was arrested on Monday for a flag burning protest on Facebook.

State’s Attorney Julia Rietz cited flag burning as protected free speech in her decision not to pursue the case of Bryton Mellott.

Mellott was taken into protective custody because of threats against him.
