SPRINGFIELD – A nationwide survey that included Illinois conducted by the American Farm Bureau found favorite foods for an Independence Day cookout cost slightly more this year but still come in at less than $6 per person.
Veronica Nigh, an economist with the American Farm Bureau, said the annual mid-summer food survey found the average cost of a summer cookout for 10 people totals a little more than $56, or $5.60 per person.
“This year’s survey reveals that we’ve had very little change in prices from this year compared to less, in fact less than a one percent increase compared to a year ago,” Nigh said.
The survey, which includes foods like hot dogs, potato salad and watermelon, found meat prices dropped this year.
“We noted that meat prices; the hamburgers, spare ribs and hot dogs all declined in price,” Nigh said. “That’s the result of increasing supply of both hog and cattle livestock and the resulting meat products.”
The summer cookout survey serves as part of Farm Bureau’s market-basket series, which also includes the popular annual Thanksgiving Dinner Cost Survey.
