BLOOMINGTON – Local police are offering tips to make the 4th of July safe, especially for those of you who will be hearing to park to enjoy the fireworks show.

The McLean County Sky Concert which will feature patriotic music provided by WJBC will begin at dusk at Miller Park in Bloomington and Fairview Park in Normal.

Bloomington Police spokeswoman Sara Mayer said no pets, fireworks or bicycle riding are allowed in the park on Monday.

“You can ride your bike to the park, but once you get in there are so many people and kids running around we just ask that you walk through to avoid any accidents,” Mayer said.

Mayer added all park visitors are subject to being recorded on video.

“We will have some cameras up in place for public safety,” Mayer said. “We just want to make people aware of that.”

Alcohol is also outlawed, but that’s at all times.

Police will also close Morris Avenue from Wood Street to Butchers Lane starting at 1:30 p.m.

Police in Normal say there are no special rules for Fairview Park on the holiday. Pets, bike riding and sparklers are all allowed, but officers will have additional patrols to ensure everyone’s safety.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
