Chiefs roughed up at Beloit

BELOIT, Wisc. – The Peoria Chiefs were blown out by the Beloit Snappers 9-4 on Wednesday night. The loss, their fourth in a row, drops the Chiefs to 2-5 in the second half and 42-35 overall.

Beloit jumped on Chiefs starter Brennan Leitao for two runs in each of the first three innings. Michael Martin drew a leadoff walk in the first and moved to second on a sac bunt. He scored on a single by Skye Bolt and two batters later the Snappers took a 2-0 lead on a single by JC Rodriguez.

The Chiefs got a run back in the top of the second inning against Michael Murray. RJ Dennard doubled to left-center with two outs and scored on a single by birthday boy Leo Pina.

Beloit kept the offense going over the next two innings. Jose Chavez walked with one out in the second and moved to second on a single by Martin. Trace Loehr singled to left to score Chavez and Martin also scored when Vaughn Bryan booted the ball for an error and a 4-1 Beloit lead. In the third inning Rodriguez singled with one out and moved to third on a single by Edwin Diaz. With two outs Chavez walked to load the bases and Martin singled home a pair for a 6-1 Snappers lead.

The Chiefs got back into the game in the fifth inning. Craig Aikin reached on an infield single and Eli Alvarez walked with two outs. Brian O’Keefe doubled to left-center to score both runners and cut the Snappers lead to 6-3.

Beloit came right back to break the game open again in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Howell reached on an error by Edmundo Sosa with one out and Edwin Diaz singled to left. Chavez doubled home Howell and Diaz scored on a single by Martin for an 8-3 Beloit lead. The Chiefs couldn’t turn an inning-ending double play on a ball hit by Loehr and Chavez scored to push the lead to 9-3.

The Chiefs got a consolation run in the ninth against the Snappers bullpen. Bryan led off with a walk and Aikin singled to center. Jared Lyons took over for Cody Kurz and Sosa singled home Bryan to cut the lead to 9-4. Both runners moved up on a groundout before O’Keefe popped up and Chinea flew out to end the game.

Leitao (4-7) took the loss allowing nine runs, six earned, on 11 hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out six. Tyler Bray issued a walk and struck out two in two scoreless innings.
