SPRINGFIELD – Volkswagen has been dealing with a scandal surrounding some of their diesel driven cars and now they have settled the case with regulators. In Illinois, that means a possible big payout to owners.
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan said collectively it’s a $275 million settlement. Volkswagen sold the cars as a clean environmental choice.
“What they’ve done is insert software into these cars that would essentially defeat the detection of the smog that they were in fact emitting into the environment,” Madigan said. “It was really an egregious situation,”
The settlement will cover nearly 30,000 cars sold or leased in Illinois that were designed to flout rules covering car emissions.
Owners will receive a payment of at least $5100 and they will also be able to get their cars fixed to reduce emissions or bought back by the company. Drivers of the cars will want to go to Volkswagen’s web page for complete information.
