WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Tx., may have left the presidential race but he is still making waves on Capitol Hill.
Cruz presided over a Senate hearing where he accused the Obama administration of under-emphasizing the “threat of radical Islam.”
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said the hearing boosted anti-Muslim rhetoric and bigotry in the United States and he questioned the logic of the hearing after the Senate defeated legislation designed to keep guns out of the hands of terrorist
“The presumption when it came to the Second Amendment was ‘Give them the gun, ask questions later.’ ” Durbin said. “Now we have this hearing and instead of dealing with suspected terrorists, we are dealing with a suspect religion, according to some and that’s where we cross the line.”
Durbin credited former President George W. Bush with stating that the religion of Islam wasn’t the enemy as the nation witnessed the horrors of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
“The notion that we would call for radical Christians, radical Islam and such and therefore have the right answer to keep America safe I think is just fundamentally wrong,” Durbin said.
